Fly into Preveza Airport with Create Holidays and you come to one of the best kept holiday secrets of Greece. Personally, we’ve been coming here for 30 years and although we always told our friends about the island of Lefkas (or Lefkada as it is sometimes known) and the mainland resorts of Parga and Paleros, we always loved it when they went elsewhere and left the beauty of this small corner of western Greece to us.
With Create Holidays you can get a cheap flight from London Heathrow to Preveza aboard our British Airways charter plane at 09:40 on Sunday mornings, complete with free 23kg baggage allowance. We also offer direct flights to Preveza from London Gatwick.
Before telling you about the white island, which is how the name Lefkas translates, I am going to take you north from Preveza Airport to the beautiful mainland resort of Parga. An hour's drive and you will find Parga below you, a jumble of colourful buildings and houses looking reminiscent of a delightful Cornish seaside village, but with sunshine! Ten more minutes and you are in its cobbled maze of streets ready to find your Create Holiday hotel and begin your Greek adventure. Clear waters and sandy beaches are yours for the taking. Parga has a large range of hotels from individual rooms in small and friendly hotels to full, five star luxury.
Turn south out of Preveza Airport and you are on your way to Lefkas. A small detour however, will bring you into Paleros. Now this resort is an unknown gem, and if you are looking for the elusive 'real Greece' then this is the ideal place to book your Greek holiday.
Let us go on now to the Ionian island of Lefkas (Lefkada). An unusual island in that you don’t have to get on a ferry - Lefkas is connected to the mainland by a causeway, a thin strip of land with a road on top - and either side of this road, history waves at you as you go past. Cleopatra and Mark Antony stayed here and gods, goddesses and mythical characters are all part of this area’s past. You actually get onto the island of Lefkas by a floating swing bridge, which every now and again swings out to let a luxury yacht sail by.
The biggest resort on Lefkas is Nidri. With the main street now pedestrianised, Nidri is a bustling resort where you can do nothing or do everything. The town beach in Nidri is perfectly nice, but for the best beaches hire a boat from Trident Marine and pootle out to the nearby beaches which are inaccessible by road and laze in the shade of a Greek pine. Alternatively, hire a car either for the duration of your holiday or just for a couple of days and check out the best beaches on the west side of the island. These really are beaches to die for! If you are feeling energetic, you can hire a mountain bike and cycle inland where time really has stopped still. Think lazy tavernas, a glass of beer and a happy, relaxed atomosphere.
South of Nidri is Vassiliki, a small village with a large stretch of beach. If you are into windsurfing, catamaran or dinghy sailing, then this really is the place for you. I had my first go in a catamaran in Vassiliki and I have to say it is one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done! With a vast choice of places to eat, we recommend you only take bed and breakfast and eat out at the local tavernas where freshly caught fish and sizzling steaks are available very cheaply.
The best beaches on Lefkas are on the west side of the island so we suggest hiring a car – the island is relatively small - 22 miles long and maximum of 9 miles wide - and there is just one road that goes around the island so you cannot get lost.
Wherever you decide, with Create Holidays you can create your ideal holiday in Lefkas by booking a cheap flight to Preveza, along with your choice of hotel at very competitive prices.
